Amazon has this week launched a new site as part of its growing e-store range. This one is called AmazonWireless and focuses on the sale of mobile phones and service plans.
The site is currently in beta as Amazon figures out the best way to sell these products to its customer base, but it does already have 120 phones on offer from Verizon Wireless and AT&T. Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile are expected to be added soon, but with no clear date as to when that will happen yet. Unfortunately the iPhone isn’t present, but may be a future addition and is surely something Amazon will want.
Paul Ryder, vice president of Consumer Electronics for Amazon.com said:
We’ve taken our eight years’ experience selling cell phones to create a new site that makes a potentially confusing transaction much easier for customers … The step-by-step purchase process on AmazonWireless makes it easy for customers who already have a plan to upgrade their phones. If you want to establish new cell phone service, we’ve made it simple to find the right phone, service plan and options for your needs. We’ve also eliminated the technical jargon and frustrating rebate paperwork that customers often face when buying a phone.
AmazonWireless takes you through the whole process of signing up to a contract. When adding the phone of you choice to your shopping basket you can choose a new individual account, or upgrade an existing one. There is also copious amounts of information about each phone, for example, the LG Xenon GR500 phone web page offers multiple images, a full spec breakdown, and detailed information on the features you get.
